Since 2020 I have been sharing 4 podcast tips in May of every year. So far, I’ve shared 20 podcast tips already. You can find the tips in the first, second, third, fourth and fifth edition of this series. Today I will keep the tradition going and share 4 more podcast tips (in May 2024). These are mostly educational podcasts (which doesn’t mean they’re not fun haha, far from). These are podcasts which I am currently listening to most. But of course I am also still listening to the previous podcasts I shared, so make sure to take a look at those too. Side note: the tips from today are all Dutch.
1 Zij is van mij
This is a podcast with a clear start and ending, it has only 8 episodes. Zij is van mij (translated as ‘She is mine’) discusses femicide in The Netherlands. The general definition of femicide that is used in this podcast is a little narrower the official definition, as it discuss women who were murdered by their ex-partner or partner. Every 10 days, a women is the victim of femicide in The Netherlands. Every number is too high, but the number of femicides in The Netherlands is higher than in surrounding countries. In this podcast the makers explore why this is the case. But they also discuss femicide in general: what is it? Why do men commit femicide? How does the system fail? And what can we do to get the number of femicides to zero?
2 Moordzaken
Moordzaken (translated as: Murder cases) is also about death. Apparently, that’s a big theme I am curious for this year. Moordzaken discusses, very surprisingly, murder cases in The Netherlands. They discuss cases from the past (I think the oldest case discussed is somewhere in the 1800’s) and from recent years. Some are famous, some are not. I have doubted to share (and listen) to this podcast because it sometimes feels like it’s entertainment over dead people’s bodies and their relatives who were left behind. But I do feel like the makers of the podcast discuss the cases with dignity. I like to listed to it because it has an educational element too. The podcast teaches you quite a bit about the justice system in The Netherlands and why people commit murder in the first place. It’s interesting because it’s something most people (luckily) don’t come in contact with.
3 Over routines
Something completely different: Over routines (translated as: about routines). Over routines is a podcast in which the host, a very famous person in The Netherlands: Arie Boomsma, interviews someone else in every episode. The guests all have something special to tell when it comes to health, mindfulness or sports. He interviews professional athletes, entrepreneurs, coaches and more. They all have something special to share. Some know everything about how to sleep very deep, some do triathlons, some struggled with addictions and now run marathons, etc. Boomsma asks them everything about their specialty, but also about their personal routines. That’s why the show is called Over routines. Each guests gives insights to their personal routines, from the first thing they do in the morning to the last thing before they go to sleep. It’s a very personal thing to ask and everybody has different routines, making each episode special.
4 Ralph’s date (Previously: Jurre’s date)
Ralph’s date has the same set-up as Over Routines. In every episode he interviews someone who you might not meet so often. Sometimes these interviews are anonymous, but often they’re not. The interviews are not with experts or famous people. They’re with ordinary people just like you and me. But like I said, they’re still people you might not meet too often. Every guest has something to tell about sex, drugs or relationships. Ralph interviews people who were addicted to specific drugs, sex or alcohol, people who have certain fetishes, people who were sterilized, people with harmful relationships, etc. Many subjects discussed are taboos. That’s exactly what makes it so interesting. I personally wouldn’t know how it feels to be addicted to drugs or what some fetishes entail, so it’s interesting to hear from people who do. This podcast really shows the diversity in people’s preferences and experiences and I personally love that.
These were my 4 podcast tips in May 2024!
Yours sincerely,
Romee
