Trying vegan cheese

Trying vegan cheese

Posted on April 17, 2017February 11, 2025

When it comes to food, I love trying new things! I find it exciting to try new dishes (but the struggle in favorite restaurants is always real, should I try something new or go for my favorite dish?). New things can also be a little scary, because they can turn out disgusting too. You just can’t tell. The past week I tried something new: grilled cheese sandwiches with vegan cheese.

Sustainability

Because I want to live an eco-positive lifestyle, I want to live sustainable on every possible aspect in my life. Food is a most important one, it creates the second biggest impact (the biggest is the stuff you buy) on the planet. Even though I’m a vegetarian already, I want to try some vegan things too these days. Just see how I like it. And if I have the choice, I eat vegan. My parents buy mostly the right things already: avocado’s, hummus, falafel, seaweed. Yes, these things make me happy! But then there’s my favorite snack: the grilled cheese sandwich. Since we never have vegan cheese at home, I still fall for this non-vegan snack. However, cheese is not sustainable at all. It takes massive amounts of water, emissions, land and animals suffer for it too.

‘It takes 500 liters of water to produce 1 liter of cow milk. Only half is needed to produce soy milk. Because cow cheese consists of 10 liters of cow milk on average, it takes 5000 liters of water to produce one kilogram of cow cheese.’

Vegan Cheese

Okay, so I don’t want to give up grilled cheese sandwiches all together. Luckily there is such a thing as vegan cheese! Yes! In my hometown they sell it at the Ekoplaza (an organic food store) and this happens to be close my my house (gheghe!). Life is good if you live in a city. So, hop, I went to the store and bought the vegan cheese. It’s a little expensive, but cow cheese isn’t cheap either. Somebody (or something) else is just paying the price if you don’t. Besides, the more vegan cheese is sold, the cheaper it’ll get.

Taste Test

Once home I was ready for battle! Let’s make these vegan grilled cheese sandwiches. I have to say: when it comes to looks there is no difference. Now, let’s taste. And guess what? I thought it was delicious! This vegan cheese is a wonderful alternative. I can’t say it tastes the same as cow cheese, but it is just as good. Different good. I won’t be eating cow cheese anymore!

Update: later on I also wrote about another recipe for a vegan grilled cheese sandwich, with just 2 ingredients. That one is my favorite recipe!

Yours sincerely,
Romee

ABOUT ME

when a teen goes green

Hi! My name is Romee and I live an eco-positive life. An eco-positive lifestyle is a lifestyle with more positive than negative impact on beautiful planet earth. Compared to most people, I live extremely sustainable. I don’t fly, eat meat or animal products, buy only secondhand clothing, etc. On the other hand, I try to help others as much as I can by donating a big chunk of my income, donating plasma, donating poop (yes!), volunteering, etc. On this blog you can read all about my lifestyle with only positive impact. I also have a Dutch Youtube channel (@duurzaamleven) and Dutch Instagram (@duurzaamlevenro). If you have specific questions for me, feel free to ask me anything.

Yours sincerely,
Romee (she/her)
