Finding Vegan Restaurants: HappyCow

Past Monday I came back from my holiday. I traveled to Budapest with my partner and two friends (the coming weeks I’ll tell you more about the traveling itself). Today I want to talk about another sustainability aspect while on the road: vegan food. I personally find the Netherlands a walhalla for vegan food (but we can do much better) and I know where to look for vegan food. But in other countries this can be tricky. Luckily there’s an amazing website/app for finding vegan restaurants: HappyCow.

Sustainable Barbecuing

In the Netherlands it already feels like summer this March. This past week we almost hit the 20 degrees Celcius mark. That being an effect of the climate crisis makes me anxious. However, the paradox is that this weather also makes me happy, I like sun. And I am not the only one. The past week I’ve even seen people barbecuing already. And even though I like a good vegan barbecue too, there’s usually something going wrong when people use the barbecue. That’s why today I want to tell you about sustainable barbecuing.

Environmental Reasons Against Meat Consumption

People ask me all the time why I am vegan. ‘Do you do it for the animals, your health or the climate?’ is a common question that I get. My answer is: ‘all of the above’. Over the years the reasons to stay vegan just seem to pile up, my drive for veganism only gets stronger. But it is true that I went vegetarian about 6 years ago for just one reason: the climate. It was the first thing that triggered me to change my diet. And since it was the thing that made me go vegetarian, I want to share more about it with you. So, today I am sharing more about the environmental reasons against meat consumption.

Vegan Food Diary for a Week

I’m back with an old favorite: a food diary. Over the past 4 years as a vegan I’ve gotten more and more into a bubble. A vegan bubble. Sometimes to the point that I forget that people who eat everything have no clue about what I eat as a vegan. It’s become my normal to eat vegan, obviously. But since this is not the case for everyone I am going to share a food diary with you this week. Here’s my vegan food diary for a week.

Ethical Reasons Against Fish Consumption

Quite a while ago I wrote a post about the ethical reasons to not consume meat. For me, meat means dead flesh of an animal. Any animal. This includes fish. However, the question ‘do you eat fish?’ is something vegetarians hear often. Quite compelling since there is a special name for this diet. It’s a ‘pescatarian’ diet. This question implies that people don’t see fish as meat, which is incorrect. However, I did choose to write a separate post about fish today. I am telling you about the ethical reasons against fish consumption.

The best vegan fish products

There are many vegan alternatives to animal products on the market. Vegan egg, vegan tuna, vegan steak. Amazing! The more the merrier I’d say. However, some vegan products are better than others. And so, I want to make an ultimate list of my personal favorites. So that whenever you want try a vegan alternative for a product, you can take a look at this list and then see what brand I personally like best. So that when you try a vegan product, you try the most delicious product there is! This is the third post in this series, for fish. The first post covered the best meat replacements and the second one covered cheese and eggs. There are more things to cover, like candy, honey or dairy to name some examples. I will get into those products another time. As I said: today is about the best vegan fish products!

Ethical Veganism

Today, as I am writing this post, it is my vegan anniversary. I finally looked it up and put it in my agenda yesterday. Such a coincidence! I always knew that it was a very random date since I just decided one day: I’m doing it. I’m going vegan! As I said, the day that I am writing this, it’s been 4 years! Woohoo. I thought that therefore it would be good to write about the very base of this lifestyle I’ve had ever since: ethical veganism.

Pro-Healthy but not Pro-Diet

Today it’s time for me to make a clear distinction. I talk about health quite a bit on this blog. When it comes to policies, personal behavior or societal behavior I usually have a clear opinion on health. I want people to be as healthy as they can be, because I believe that this makes life for all of us better. However, I did not realize that the term healthy is not a very clear term and that some people take the wrong assumptions when I use the term healthy. That’s why I want to clearly elaborate on this today: I am pro healthy but absolutely not pro diet.

Why Vegan Don’t Eat or Use Non-Vegan Rest Products

I try to live as vegan as I can. With food I have explained myself quite a bit already. I’ve written why I don’t eat meat, dairy and eggs and there is more to come. But I also am vegan on other aspects like clothing and cosmetics. I am simply against using animals for human pleasure, in any way. Therefore I don’t buy animal products. That’s clear. But what about by-products? Products that are the so called waste or rest product from the animal product industry. Things like animal fat or leftover leather. Why don’t I use/eat those?
